The Story of Mo Ran Gak:

A Legacy of Resilience, Flavor, and Family

The roots of Mo Ran Gak trace back to its signature dish, naengmyeon—cold buckwheat noodles, which originated in North Korea. One man, in search of freedom and a better life, escaped to South Korea, carrying with him the memory and tradition of this beloved dish. There, he transformed his culinary heritage into a thriving franchise that gained widespread acclaim in the early 20th century.
Driven by the dream of sharing Korean culture beyond borders, the original founder set his sights on America. It was at this pivotal moment that Mr. Lee, now the visionary behind Mo Ra Gak, stepped in. Lee recognized that Southern California's climate was perfect for pyeongyang naengmyeon. He saw not just a dish, but a symbol of home and identity for Korean Americans. With a deep sense of purpose, he sought to bring an authentic taste of the motherland to those longing for its flavors.
The journey, however, was not without its challenges. As the seasons changed, so did the demand—naengmyeon thrived in the summer but struggled during the colder months. Fueled by passion and perseverance, Lee transformed Mo Ran Gak from a seasonal eatery into a year-round destination by adding Korean BBQ to the menu. He perfected the naengmyeon recipe and expanded the menu to showcase the rich diversity of Korean cuisine. His commitment to excellence remained unwavering, as he sourced only the finest cuts of meat and the freshest ingredients.
Now, more than two decades later, Mo Ran Gak is celebrated as one of Orange County’s most beloved Korean BBQ establishments—renowned for its authenticity, quality, and heart. The Lee family has built more than just a restaurant—they've created a place where generations can come together to share meals and create lasting memories.
Today, Mo Ran Gak stands as a testament to the enduring power of food, family, and belief in one's vision. It is a celebration of Korean heritage, brought to life through every dish and every shared moment at the table.

Mo Ran Gak is nominally a barbecue restaurant, but the thin, blushing slivers of thoroughly marbled brisket and buttery slabs of short rib are just a precursor for the true showstopper: bowls of the finest naengmyeon available anywhere.

Morangak is the archetypal Korean barbecue; it's got booths and tables each equipped with a stainless steel grill and burners, a huge, noisy exhaust hood over each grill, and an automated machine near the entrance that dispenses something purporting to be coffee.
